Know Thy Purpose. 3 Tips to Discovering Your Purpose

By James M. Rink

Data shows, Millennials prioritize Purpose over their Paychecks.  Whether you are a Millennial or leading one in business it is time to Know Thy Purpose.

There are 56 million Millennials working in America today.  Less than 30% of them are engaged with their work.  It’s no wonder that 21% of millennial workers have switched jobs in the last year.  Millennial turnover costs the US economy over $30 billion per year.

It’s time to think differently about your job and your Purpose.  Jobs will change but your Purpose stays the same.

Less than 25% of people say they have a clear sense of Purpose.  Out of those many have a seasonal sense of Purpose.  Seasonal Purpose can be volunteering, helping someone or going on a nonprofit humanitarian medical trip etc.

If you are a Millennial and want to compete in business, you must have a clear sense of your Purpose and be living it authentically.

If you are a business owner, for your business to compete, you have to have a culture that values Millennials’ need for Purpose.  Purpose increases engagement.

Whether you are building your career, looking for a job, starting a new business or rebuilding your company, here are 3 tips to Knowing Thy Purpose at work.

Tip 1

Discover your Purpose within.

Your Purpose is inside of you. Train yourself to think differently about your Purpose.  Too often people look outside of themselves for Purpose.  Success or achievement is not Purpose.

Stop trying to find your Purpose at work.  Start discovering your Purpose within so that you can live your Purpose at work.

Your Purpose is where your genius lives.  It is like the sweet spot of a golf club or baseball bat.  Learning how to swing takes time, patience and practice.  Learning how to live your Purpose does too.  You find it within yourself and you live it thru your actions outside of yourself.

Tip 2

Living your Purpose inspires others to live their Purpose.

Surround yourself with People on Purpose.  Shared Purpose at work creates a super charged energy of productivity and engagement.

Imagine the possibilities if you knew one another’s Purpose at work.  From the C-Suite to the entry level position, everyone working their individual Purpose to help build the company’s Purpose.

Tip 3

Work your Purpose

When business disruptions happen, working your Purpose helps you to pivot, reinvent and get back to work.

If you are a Millennial or Gen Z worker, be prepared, there’s change ahead.

According to a report published by Dell Technologies, 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven't even been invented yet.

The fast rise of Artificial Intellegence is changing industries, jobs and careers.  As new jobs are created, and old ones go away, working your Purpose will help guide you to your next opportunity.

My friend, Mark, went thru the Purpose of You Workshop over 25 years ago.  Mark’s Purpose is to be a ‘Producer of Fun, a Communicator of Hope, and a Teacher of Truth.’  Mark has had 3 completely different career changes in the past two decades.  Mark has been a Television and Film Editor, a Missions & Outreach Pastor for a Mega Church, and is Currently a Community Ambassador for one of the fastest growing cities in America, as well as a Relationship Manager for roofing company.  No matter what job Mark does, he takes his Purpose to work with him, as a ‘Producer of Fun, Communicator of Hope and a Teacher of Truth’... And he continually makes more money doing so.

Again, Your Jobs will change but your Purpose always stays the same
