Monetizing Your Purpose, #OpenForWork

By James M. Rink

With over 25 million Americans unemployed and Open for Work, Monetizing Your Purpose will help you get your next great job.

Your Purpose is far more valuable than your talent.

If you are Open to Work, stop trying to monetize your talent and start monetizing your Purpose.

I offered this advice to my friend Cristina.  She’s been a marketing executive for over 20 years, who is a newly divorced single working mom of three daughters.

Cristina and I first met when she enrolled in my Purpose of You workshop.  Cristina knows her life’s Purpose.  Wherever you are on your journey to understanding your Purpose, here are a few tips to start Monetizing Your Purpose as you are Open to Work today.

Let’s use my Purpose of You formula to help.

Feelings + Actions + People = Purpose

Step 1

Read your perspective Company’s Purpose Statement.  Identify and make a list of all of the ‘Feeling’ words in the company’s Purpose Statement.

For example…

Disney’s Purpose statement is ‘to make people happy’.

Happy is Disney’s feeling on Purpose.

Southwest’s Purpose statement is ‘Connect People to what is important in their lives through friendly, reliable and low-cost air travel’.

Friendly is Southwest’s feeling on Purpose.

Nike’s Purpose statement is ‘to experience the emotion of competition, winning and crushing the competition’.

Emotions of competition, winning and crushing the are Nike’s feelings on Purpose.

Step 2

As you look at the feeling words in your perspective new employers’ Purpose statements, which of these Feeling words excites you?

These feeling words are your Shared Feelings of Purpose between your perspective new employer and you.

Step 3

Change your narrative on Purpose.  Begin to Communicate these Shared Feelings of Purpose throughout all of your emails, resume, CV and Job Interviews.  Focus your narrative on how you want to bring your Purpose to help build the company’s Purpose by using these Shared Feelings of Purpose.

Let’s face it, Disney is in the happiness business; they are not looking to hire unhappy people.  Southwest is the friendliness business; they are not looking to hire unfriendly people.  Nike is in the emotion of winning business; they are not looking to hire second place people.

Here’s how Monetizing Your Purpose will transform your career:

  1. Monetizing Your Purpose to your potential new employer shows you have High Emotional Intelligence which has a unique value in today’s job market.

  2. Knowing how your Purpose strategically empowers the company’s Purpose will separate you from your competition.

  3. Shared Purpose between companies and employees is great for business.  Your value to your future employer is your ability to bring your Purpose to work for them, not their competition.
