Your Purpose Promotes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
By James M. Rink
Your Purpose is your entry point for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to the people you work and live with.
I believe every life matters because every life has a Purpose. Purpose gives each and every one of us meaning, value, opportunity and unity.
Rich or Poor. Black, White, Latino or Asian. Gay or straight. Female or Male. Jew, Buddhist, Christian or Muslim. Healthy or disabled. All People matter because every person has a Purpose.
Your Purpose is found within your soul. You have a soul, as does every other living person. It’s a great human equalizer. When you Connect your Purpose with another person you create a Shared human connection that’s living your Purpose.
I help people discover, define and live their life’s Purpose.
While working with businesses I help individual employees live their Purpose at work and align it with their coworkers and the company’s purpose. This creates connection and engagement between people at work.
Understanding another person’s life story and Purpose immediately evens the playing field and empowers shared humanity in business.
No diversity can separate people living their Purpose.
Here is one example how you can live your Purpose today and empower Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in another person’s life. Make this your Intentional act of Purpose.
Let’s use the Purpose of You formula to help:
Feelings + Actions + People = Purpose
Step 1
Identify one of your Greater Good Influencers and how they made you feel.
Who loved you to allow you to be who you are today? A Parent, Grandparent, Teacher, Coach or Faith Leader. These are our Greater Good Influencers. Pick one of yours.
Recall a specific memory you had with your Greater Good Influencer and identify how that memory makes you feel today.
Here is a list of a few feelings to help.
Love Happy Freedom Peace Patient Hope Gratitude Passion
Compassion Alive Serenity Inspire Fascination Pride
Joy Secure Care Awe
Step 2
Think of one person, you feel has been or could be marginalized at work. Someone who doesn’t get the same breaks, opportunities or fair treatment as others.
Step 3
Now, tell your story about your Greater Good memory to your marginalized work friend. Tell them how that experience made you feel.
Then, ask your work friend who influenced them and how it made them feel.
Listen to the similarities of your life’s stories. You will Find common ground in your shared greater good influencers and how they made each of you feel.
Business is always about relationships and connecting with people. Feeling marginalized is more common than you think. Giving these feelings to others is foundational to living your Purpose at work to help bring Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
